Chinese ship issues radio challenge to PH vessels in West PH Sea

admin May 27, 2025

A TENSE encounter unfolded in the West Philippine Sea on Tuesday as a Chinese Coast Guard (CCG) ship issued a radio challenge to a Philippine civilian vessel and Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) ships en route to Pag-asa Island.

The CCG asserted China’s claim of undisputed sovereignty over the islands in the South China Sea and adjacent waters, citing its domestic laws and international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

The CCG explicitly rejected the 2016 arbitral ruling that invalidated China’s expansive nine-dash line claim, calling the arbitration “illegal.”

The radio challenge represents the latest in a series of confrontations between Chinese and Philippine vessels in the contested waters.

China’s assertion of sovereignty over areas within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ), as defined by UNCLOS, continues to be a major source of tension in the region.

The incident highlights the ongoing dispute over the South China Sea and the challenges faced by the Philippines in protecting its maritime rights and interests. The Philippine government has consistently maintained its commitment to upholding the 2016 arbitral ruling and its sovereign rights in the West Philippine Sea.

This latest incident underscores the need for continued diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions and find a peaceful resolution to the South China Sea dispute.

The international community has a vested interest in maintaining freedom of navigation and upholding the rule of law in these crucial waterways.

The Philippines’ steadfast stance, backed by international law and the support of its allies, remains crucial in navigating this complex geopolitical situation. The ongoing actions of the CCG continue to raise concerns about regional stability and the potential for further escalation.
