HOUSE Committee on Good Government and Public Accountability Chair Joel Chua of Manila on Friday stressed that the House of Representatives is now strictly adhering to the proper impeachment process required by the Supreme Court (SC).
“Mahigpit na sinusunod ngayon ang tamang prosesong itinakda ng Constitution at Supreme Court,” Chua said, as he outlined the steps taken by the chamber in handling the complaints.
Chua said the House followed a clear, step-by-step approach: “Tinanggap ang reklamo, sinuri kung kumpleto at may basehan, binigyan ng pagkakataon ang inaakusahan na sumagot, at nag-schedule ng mga hearing para klaruhin ang mga isyu.”
He underscored that these actions are in line with what the High Court expects from impeachment proceedings.
“Ang gusto ng Korte Suprema: sundin ang tamang proseso, igalang ang karapatan ng inaakusahan, at siguraduhin na fair ang imbestigasyon,” Chua said.
“Hindi puwedeng shortcut. Dapat maayos, patas, at ayon sa batas,” he added.
Chua also recalled that a previous ruling by the SC highlighted deficiencies in the earlier process, which led to the respondent’s legal victory.
“Ibig sabihin, hindi dahil walang kaso — kundi dahil may pagkukulang sa proseso,” Chua said.
With the House now addressing those gaps, Chua maintained that there is no basis to halt the ongoing proceedings.
“Pero hindi na dapat pigilan ang proseso na siya mismo ang humiling na sundin sa Korte Suprema noong nakaraang taon,” Chua said.
Chua emphasized that the current proceedings are anchored on fairness, due process and compliance with constitutional standards, ensuring that both the complainants and the respondent are given full opportunity to be heard.
