THE father of the Grade 8 student who carried out the shooting at Ateneo de Zamboanga University on August 18 has been formally charged with reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and physical injuries.
The filing of charges follows official confirmation that the two firearms allegedly used by the minor in the attack were legally owned by his father. Authorities cited the father’s failure to properly secure and safeguard his registered weapons as the basis for the criminal complaint, which holds him accountable for negligence that led to the tragic loss of life and harm to others.
Earlier investigations confirmed that both the high‑powered firearm and the .45‑caliber pistol used by the student were registered in the father’s name.
The father, a former official with the Bureau of Customs stationed at the Port of Zamboanga, had been relieved of his post shortly after the incident to ensure an impartial investigation. Prosecutors argued that his failure to exercise reasonable care in storing his firearms allowed a minor unrestricted access to lethal weapons, directly enabling the violent attack that claimed the life of another student and terrified the entire school community.
