Alvarez’ call for Marcos resignation reflects pro-China stance – Rep. Adiong

admin March 31, 2024

A LEADER in the House of Representatives on Sunday strongly criticized former Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez for urging Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to resign amidst escalating tensions in the West Philippine Sea, accusing the former House chief of prioritizing political maneuvering over national strategy.

House Assistant Majority Leader and Lanao del Sur 1st District Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong said Alvarez’s true intention is clear: his call for the President’s resignation reflects only his pro-China stance.

“It’s transparent that Representative Alvarez is less concerned about national strategy and more focused on political maneuvering,” Adiong pointed out.

“His call for President Marcos Jr. to resign reflects only his Pro-China stance and not any true concern for the plight of fellow Filipinos” he added.

Adiong warned that such an approach “undermines the democratic process and disrespects the mandate given to President Marcos Jr. by the Filipino people.”

The House leader underscored the importance of questioning the underlying motives behind Alvarez’s remarks, labeling them as political strategies rather than genuine concern for the welfare of the nation.

“We must question the motives behind such statements and recognize them for what they are: political strategies, not genuine concern for national welfare,” Adiong pointed out.

He then urged for a focus on the best interests of the country in leadership and policy decisions, rather than succumbing to the political ambitions of a few individuals.

“Our nation’s leadership and policy decisions should be guided by the best interests of the Philippines, not by the political ambitions of a few,” Adiong concluded.

In a recent statement, Alvarez urged Marcos to adopt a pragmatic approach to tensions in the West Philippine Sea, emphasizing the need to prioritize domestic issues like poverty alleviation.

Alvarez, who currently represents the first district of Davao del Norte province in Congress, also cautioned against military confrontation with China and suggested that Marcos consider resigning to de-escalate tensions, transferring presidential duties to Vice President Sara Duterte.
