MAJORITY of Liberal Party (LP) members have officially joined the expanding supermajority coalition in the House of Representatives supporting the continued leadership of Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez in the 20th Congress—bringing the total number of formal signatories to 278 out of 285 House members who have expressed their backing.
Deputy Speaker David “Jayjay” Suarez of Quezon said this development cements the broadening consensus across party lines that Speaker Romualdez remains the most unifying, competent and effective choice to lead the chamber during the crucial second half of the Marcos administration.
“As of today, 285 House members have expressed support for Speaker Romualdez, with 278 lawmakers having already signed formal declarations—including four out of six members of the LP who are now part of the larger movement for legislative continuity and national stability,” Suarez said.
“Speaker Romualdez has earned the trust of the current and incoming members of the House through principled, results-oriented leadership,” he added. “What we are witnessing is no longer just support from traditional allies—it’s a political groundswell cutting across the entire spectrum.”
“The Speaker is also heeding the President’s call for results-oriented leadership, as demonstrated by the House of Representatives’ swift approval of the majority of priority measures aligned with the Chief Executive’s legislative agenda,” Suarez added.
The supermajority bloc now includes key parties such as Lakas-CMD, Nacionalista Party, National Unity Party, Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC), Partido Federal ng Pilipinas the Party-list Coalition Foundation Inc., and now, the LP.
For many lawmakers, the decision of the majority of LP members to align with Speaker Romualdez reflects a recognition of the leadership maturity and policy competence needed at a time when effective lawmaking and institutional harmony must take precedence over political divides.
“Leadership in the House is about bringing people together to pass meaningful laws. Speaker Romualdez has done that, time and again,” Suarez said. “The unity we now see among House members reflects a collective commitment to stability, progress, and responsible governance under his stewardship.”
This comes after Suarez earlier declared that the race for the Speakership in the 20th Congress is effectively over, with Speaker Romualdez enjoying the clear backing of an overwhelming majority.
“This is already a supermajority,” Suarez reiterated. “Tapos na. The Speaker has the numbers.”
Lawmakers have credited Speaker Romualdez’s leadership in the 19th Congress for the timely passage of national budgets, the advancement of vital economic reforms, and the House’s seamless collaboration with the executive branch—key reasons for the breadth of his support.
“He has kept the House focused on outcomes that matter. That’s what institutions need—leaders who work quietly but deliver consistently,” Suarez concluded.
