THE Quezon City government reminded residents to take precautions against monkeypox after the discovery of the second and third cases in the city. According to the City Epidemiology and Surveillance Division (QCESD), the second case is a 29-year-old male, and the third case is also a male. Both monkeypox cases are under home isolation and receiving medical attention.
“Monkeypox is no joke. It has serious effects, especially on people with weakened immune systems, so it is crucial for us to be cautious to avoid getting the virus and spreading it further. Continue practicing handwashing and stay away from individuals showing symptoms of monkeypox,” said Mayor Joy Belmonte.
“If you experience symptoms of monkeypox, immediately go to the nearest health center or hospital for evaluation. The local government is ready to assist you for your speedy recovery,” the mayor added.
The 29-year-old second monkeypox case started showing symptoms (mouth lesions) on August 21 and self-reported to an institution the following day. He was examined on August 28, and the positive result came back on August 30. Meanwhile, the third case, a 36-year-old, had a fever on August 26 and developed rashes on August 27. His specimen was sent to the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) and tested positive on September 5.
In relation to this, Belmonte mentioned that the QCESD is conducting contact tracing and closely monitoring individuals in close contact with the patients. Earlier, two weeks ago, the city government reported the first case of monkeypox in the city, a 37-year-old male. He is currently receiving treatment and under home quarantine.
