Provincial buses granted temporary EDSA access for Holy Week

admin April 4, 2025

PROVINCIAL buses will be temporarily allowed on EDSA, Manila’s main thoroughfare, to accommodate the anticipated surge in travelers during the Holy Week, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) announced Friday.

The MMDA’s decision comes in response to the expected influx of passengers traveling to and from various provinces for the Lenten season.

Initially, provincial buses will be permitted on EDSA from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., starting April 9.

However, the MMDA will grant 24-hour access to the buses on EDSA from April 16 to 20, coinciding with the peak travel days of Holy Week. MMDA Chair Romando Artes clarified that buses originating from the north will be limited to the Cubao area, while those from the south will terminate at Pasay.

This measure aims to balance the increased transport needs with the potential impact on EDSA traffic.

The decision to allow provincial buses on EDSA during this period is a significant adjustment to the usual traffic management strategy.

The MMDA is expected to closely monitor traffic flow and make necessary adjustments to mitigate potential congestion. The agency is likely to coordinate closely with other transport authorities to ensure smooth operations and minimize disruption to commuters.

In anticipation of increased passenger volume and potential security concerns during the Holy Week travel period, the Philippine National Police (PNP) has announced enhanced security measures.

The PNP will deploy additional personnel to transport hubs, tourist destinations, and major event venues to address potential crime and maintain order amidst the expected crowds. Police assistance desks will be strategically located to provide immediate response to public needs.

The PNP’s enhanced security measures include intensified law enforcement operations, increased security inspections, and enhanced intelligence monitoring at critical infrastructure points, transport terminals, and churches.

Road safety measures will also be strictly enforced to alleviate traffic congestion and prevent accidents, in collaboration with traffic management agencies. This comprehensive approach aims to ensure a safe and secure environment for travelers during the busy Holy Week period.
