AUTHORITIES have confiscated an estimated ₱25 million worth of counterfeit bags in Manila, resulting in the arrest of six individuals, according to an announcement by the Philippine National Police (PNP) on Friday.
The successful operation marks a significant blow against the proliferation of fake goods within the capital city and highlights ongoing efforts to protect intellectual property rights and consumer welfare.
The PNP conducted the sting operation on Thursday night at a condominium complex in Barangay 292, Binondo.
The police detailed that the operation was preceded by thorough verification processes, including social media intelligence gathering and a successful test-buy operation, which confirmed the illegal activities of the suspects. This meticulous planning and execution led to the recovery of over 20 boxes filled with counterfeit bags, along with surveillance equipment such as closed-circuit television cameras and various pertinent documents related to the illicit trade.
The six individuals apprehended during the raid, whose identities have not yet been disclosed by the PNP, are now in police custody. They are expected to face multiple charges for their involvement in the distribution of counterfeit goods.
These charges include violations of Republic Act No. 3883, which governs the use of names in business transactions; RA No. 7394, known as the Consumer Act; RA No. 8293, the Intellectual Property Code; and RA No. 10175, the Cybercrime Prevention Act. The PNP’s swift action underscores its commitment to combating intellectual property theft and protecting consumers from fraudulent products.
