THE Manila Police District (MPD) has activated Special Investigation Task Group Malvar to investigate the fatal shooting of two Japanese citizens in Malate on Friday night. One suspect has been arrested, and another person of interest has been identified.
The incident occurred around 10:45 p.m. on August 15, 2025, along Malvar Street, near Mabini Street, in front of the Sheraton Hotel. According to initial reports, the victims, who were staying at the Midas Hotel and Casino in Pasay City, had taken a taxi cab before the attack.
The assailant ordered them out of the vehicle and shot them, taking their belongings before escaping with a companion on a motorcycle.
Police recovered the suspects’ getaway vehicle abandoned near the scene. CCTV footage analysis revealed crucial evidence, including images of the suspected gunman purchasing a cigarette and briefly lowering his mask, allowing for identification.
A witness affidavit confirmed the suspect as the shooter, who warned bystanders not to interfere before fleeing.
Authorities have identified and taken into custody the suspected gunman, who was known to frequent areas along Pedro Gil Street. A person of interest, described as a tour guide, was also identified through CCTV footage from Sheraton, Adriatico Street, and Pasay City.
Coordinated efforts with hotel management and the Japanese Embassy led to the identification of the second suspect using government-issued identification. Investigators are also exploring the possibility that the robbery was staged to mask a targeted assassination.
