Manibela to stage 3-day nationwide transport strike

admin March 19, 2025

THE Manila-based transport group, Manibela , has announced a three-day nationwide transport strike from March 24-26, 2025, in protest against alleged misrepresentations by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) regarding the Public Utility Vehicle (PUV) modernization program.

Manibela President Mar Valbuena, during a press conference, declared the strike, stating, “On Monday, we will hold a three-day transport strike. Starting Monday, March 24, we are declaring a nationwide transport strike.” He further emphasized the possibility of an earlier strike, depending on the LTFRB’s response to the group’s concerns.

Valbuena refuted the LTFRB’s claim that 86% of PUV operators have already consolidated, citing this as a key reason for the non-renewal of their franchises. “The LTFRB claims that 86% have consolidated and complied. This became the reason why our provisional authority was not renewed and we were not able to register,” Valbuena explained.

The group has demanded the immediate removal of LTFRB officials and has warned of a potential earlier strike if their demands are not met. This escalation of the dispute highlights the growing frustration among transport groups over the implementation of the PUV modernization program, which they claim has been detrimental to their livelihoods.

The strike is expected to significantly disrupt transportation services across the Philippines, impacting commuters and businesses alike. It remains to be seen whether the LTFRB will address Manibela’s concerns and avert the planned strike. This situation underscores the need for dialogue and collaboration between the government and transport groups to ensure a smooth and equitable transition towards a modernized public transportation system.
