Impeachment prosecution team attends mass ahead of VP Sara trial

Metrosundaily July 5, 2026

MEMBERS of the prosecution panel handling the impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte gathered for a religious service on Sunday at the Archdiocesan Shrine of Jesus in Pasay City, just one day before the trial officially begins.

The gathering was attended by key figures from the House of Representatives and legal experts, marking a moment of reflection and preparation as they head into the historic proceedings. According to a report from Christian Maño of Super Radyo dzBB, the group included lawmakers Leila de Lima, Chel Diokno, Ysabel Zamora, and Joel Chua.

Joining them were House Deputy Speakers Janet Garin and Jay‑Jay Suarez, Tingog Party‑list Representative Jude Acidre, House Secretary General Cheloy Garafil, and private prosecutors Attorneys Lorna Kapunan and Amando Ligutan.

The service served as more than just a personal act of faith; it was described by the attendees as a way to seek spiritual guidance as they take on their roles in the trial. They shared that they prayed for wisdom, clarity, and sound judgment not only for themselves but also for all officials and participants who will be part of the process.

The group also expressed their hopes that the proceedings will be guided by integrity, stating their desire for truth to come to light, justice to be served fairly, and the rule of law to be fully upheld throughout the hearings. The trial is set to commence at 2:00 PM on Monday, July 6. Initially, sessions will be held every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday at the same time, continuing until shortly before President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. delivers his fifth State of the Nation Address on July 27.
