BI to cancel visa of Chinese tourist arrested for drugs

admin August 15, 2023

IMMIGRATION Commissioner Norman Tansingco said the agency will be pursuing deportation charges against a Chinese man arrested for attempting to smuggle drugs at the airport.

Tansingco shared that the man, identified as Qian Qiang, 52, was intercepted after trying to travel on board a China Southern flight to Guangzhou, China on August 10 at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3.

According to reports, Qian was intercepted by Office of the Transportation Security (OTS) personnel at the final security check upon noticing an object in the shape of ammunition inside his pair of shoes.

Inspectors then cut up the sole of his shoe, and found 2 22LR ammunition rounds and a plastic container containing more or less 5 grams of methamphetamine hydrochloride more commonly known as shabu, with an approximate street value of P34,000.

This led to OTS personnel coordinating with the NAIA Anti-Illegal Drugs Inter-Agency Task Group (AIDIATG) for Qian’s arrest.

BI records showed that Qian was a holder of a valid 9(g) visa, and is working for a Philippine-based company. Violations of local laws, according to Tansingco, are sufficient grounds to cancel a foreign national’s visa.

“Foreign nationals who do not respect our laws do not deserve our country’s hospitality,” said Tansingco. “We will initiate cancellation of his visa and deportation against Qian,” he added.

Qian was arrested by the NAIA AIDIATG and will face cases in the local courts.
