Pinoys in New Caledonia advised to remain vigilant

admin May 31, 2024

There are approximately 200 Filipinos and individuals of Filipino descent live in New Caledonia.

THE Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has advised Filipinos in the New Caledonia, French territory on May 30, 2024 to avoid public spaces as it raised alert level 2 or restriction phase.

There are approximately 200 Filipinos and individuals of Filipino descent live in New Caledonia.

“Filipinos living in New Caledonia are advised to remain vigilant, avoid public spaces, and restrict non-essential movement. Filipinos are also advised to monitor and follow guidelines set by local authorities,” the advisory states.

The French government has declared a state of emergency in its South Pacific island territory of New Caledonia after deadly violence erupted for a third day.

Armed clashes between protesters, militias, and police, as well as arson attacks on buildings and cars have resulted in at least four deaths. This unrest is considered the worst since the 1980s.

In response to the violence, authorities in the capital, Noumea, have imposed a curfew and closed the main airport to commercial traffic. They have also banned public gatherings, carrying weapons, and selling alcohol. The violence stems from long-standing political tensions between the largely pro-independence indigenous Kanak communities and French inhabitants who oppose breaking ties with France.

The emergency was imposed on May 15 and lifted on May 28, but the curfew remained. Local reports indicate that at least seven people have died, and dozens have been injured since the protests began.
