PH remains committed to working with Widodo’s successor to further strengthen ties, says PBBM

admin January 10, 2024

PRESIDENT Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. assured Indonesian President Joko Widodo that the Philippines will remain committed to working closely with Indonesia to further strengthen the two countries’ bilateral relations as the Indonesian leader’s tenure draws to a close.

“As you conclude your term as the President of the Republic of Indonesia in the coming months, I am optimistic that your successor will continue the momentum of the positive trajectory in both our bilateral and regional partnership,” President Marcos said in his toast remark during the luncheon hosted for the visiting Indonesian leader.

“I assure you, sir, that the Philippines will remain committed to working closely and actively with Indonesia as we nurture our bonds of kinship and elevate our relations to new heights.”

Marcos expressed elation for meeting Widodo and for the opportunity to reaffirm the strong and close ties between the Philippines and Indonesia.

The President also recognized Indonesia’s warm hospitality during his state visit to that country in September 2022, where he and the First Lady were welcomed at the historic Istana Bogor.

“Today, allow me to reciprocate Your Excellency’s generosity as First Lady Louise and I offer you the best of Philippine culture and cuisine through today’s luncheon in this humble home we call Malacañan Palace,” Marcos said, adding, the two countries are not only neighbors, but also brothers and sisters sharing a longstanding history, vibrant culture, and common aspirations for peace and prosperity.

The two nations have fostered a mature relationship built on seven and a half decades of trust, mutual understanding, and extensive engagements through the years, Marcos said.

In a separate remark, Widodo thanked President Marcos for the warm welcome accorded to him and his delegation.

“This year we celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relation and remain committed to continue to work hand-in-hand to strengthen our cooperation for the next 75 years,” Widodo told Marcos.

“Indonesia and the Philippines have also strengthened commitment to continue to maintain ASEAN unity and centrality for the sake of peace, stability, and prosperity of our region,” he added.
