Midtown Manhattan shooting leaves 5 dead, including NYPD cop

admin July 29, 2025

A GUNMAN opened fire in a midtown Manhattan office building on Monday evening, killing four people, including an off-duty New York City police officer, and wounding another before taking his own life.

The suspect, identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura of Las Vegas, is believed to have acted alone, according to New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch.

An investigation into the motive and the targeting of this specific location is underway. Police recovered a rifle case with ammunition, a loaded revolver, and medication prescribed to Tamura from his vehicle, a BMW, which he drove cross-country to New York City.

Surveillance footage captured Tamura exiting his vehicle carrying an M4 assault rifle shortly before 6:30 pm local time and entering the office building, which houses prominent financial firms, including Blackstone and KPMG, the Irish consulate, and NFL headquarters.

He fatally shot an NYPD officer, a woman, and a security guard in the lobby, and also shot another man who survived.

After allowing a woman to exit the elevator unharmed, he proceeded to the 33rd floor where he killed another person before committing suicide.

The deceased NYPD officer was identified as 36-year-old Didarul Islam, a three-and-a-half-year veteran of the force, who is described as a hero who died as he lived.

Commissioner Tisch confirmed that Islam was married with two children and his wife is pregnant with their third. The incident occurred in the same area of Manhattan where the CEO of UnitedHealthcare was shot outside a hotel in December.
