THE HAGUE, NETHERLANDS – Former executive secretary Salvador Medialdea has been discharged from a hospital in The Hague following a heart procedure earlier this week, Senator Christopher “Bong” Go announced on Saturday.
Medialdea, who accompanied former president Rodrigo Duterte to the Netherlands on March 11th, will require six weeks of recovery in the country.
Duterte’s trip coincided with the issuance of an ICC arrest warrant upon his arrival in the Philippines, related to alleged crimes against humanity during his administration’s controversial drug war. Duterte participated in a pre-trial hearing via video call on March 14th.
The drug war, according to official reports, resulted in at least 6,000 deaths. However, human rights organizations claim the death toll may be significantly higher, potentially reaching 20,000.
Medialdea’s health situation adds another layer to the ongoing international scrutiny surrounding Duterte and his administration’s actions.
