ICC disputes Duterte camp’s claim of ‘frequent falls’ in detention

admin May 22, 2026

THE administrative body of the International Criminal Court (ICC) has contradicted statements from the defense team of former President Rodrigo Duterte regarding his health condition while in custody.

The tribunal clarified that it has found no evidence supporting claims that the former leader has been experiencing “frequent falls” since being detained. The statement comes as Duterte’s legal representatives raised health concerns, arguing that his physical condition requires special medical attention and consideration under international detention standards.

In its official response, the ICC’s administration emphasized that Duterte receives regular and comprehensive medical check‑ups conducted by qualified health professionals assigned to the detention facility.

Medical records reviewed by the court show that while the former president does have age‑related health conditions, there have been no reports or documented incidents indicating repeated falls. Authorities added that all necessary care and assistance are being provided to ensure his well‑being in line with the court’s established rules and regulations.

The clarification highlights the differing narratives surrounding Duterte’s status as he faces charges of crimes against humanity linked to the previous administration’s anti‑drug campaign.

The ICC noted that it remains fully committed to upholding the rights and dignity of all detainees, while also maintaining transparency regarding conditions inside its facilities. The court added that it stands ready to share official medical documentation should it be required during the proceedings, to settle any speculations about the actual state of his health and treatment.
