Comelec probes alleged vote-buying incident at Duterte-Sara rally in HK

admin March 10, 2025

THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) is investigating reports of alleged vote-buying during a recent political rally in Hong Kong, reportedly attended by former President Rodrigo Duterte and Vice President Sara Duterte.

While Comelec Chairperson George Garcia stated that the poll body has yet to verify the credibility of the report, the allegations are serious and warrant investigation.

In an ambush interview, Garcia acknowledged receiving reports claiming voters were offered HK$200 (approximately P1,400) to vote for a specific Senate slate.

“Allegedly, these are done to woo voters in Hong Kong to vote straight. But we still need to verify that because it may be fake news,” Garcia said.

Garcia emphasized that the information remains unverified and is currently considered “raw information” lacking credibility.

However, he assured the public that the Comelec is actively coordinating with the Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong to investigate the matter thoroughly and gather additional details.

The Comelec is urging anyone who attended the rally and was offered or received money in exchange for a vote to come forward and provide information.

“This will make our investigation easier,” Garcia added.

The investigation’s outcome will be crucial in determining the veracity of the allegations and whether any violations of election laws occurred.

The alleged involvement of high-profile figures like Duterte and his daughter adds significant weight to the investigation and raises concerns about the integrity of the electoral process.
