FOR nine-year-old Kehn Zachary Aquino, the directive from President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to assist individuals facing medical challenges wasn’t just a source of hope; it was a lifeline. Living in Orani, Bataan, Kehn successfully underwent a kidney transplant on February 12th. However, his journey to recovery reflects the quiet sacrifices and tireless efforts of his parents, who worked relentlessly to secure the funds for his life-saving operation.
In a heartfelt handwritten letter to the President, Kehn expressed his profound gratitude: “Thank you very much, dear President, for the free medicine and laboratory tests. Because of this, my parents can focus on other needs, especially my education.” He continued, sharing his positive lab results and his aspirations: “My lab results are good, and I hope to grow strong and healthy. I promise to become a chef in the future.”
The financial burden, however, didn’t end with the surgery. The ongoing costs of post-operative medication and laboratory tests threatened to derail Kehn’s dream. In his letter, he poignantly wrote, “Finding the money and a donor wasn’t easy, but by God’s grace, I am now a kidney transplant recipient.”
Just as hope seemed to dwindle for Kehn and his family, President Marcos launched free post-transplant services through the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth), providing a crucial intervention. Overwhelmed with gratitude, Kehn penned a letter expressing his thanks for the renewed chance at life and the opportunity to pursue his dreams.
On Thursday, during the President’s visit to the National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI), Kehn personally delivered his letter, a testament to his resilience and the transformative impact of timely assistance. His story serves as a powerful reminder of the profound difference that compassionate support can make in the lives of those facing significant health challenges.
