admin November 21, 2023

IN celebration of the National Children’s Month, lady legislators of the House of Representatives (HRep) on Monday mounted the exhibit “Empowered Children Empower the Nation.”

House Committee on the Welfare of Children chairperson BHW Party-list Rep. Angelica Natasha Co described the opening of the exhibit as a day not only of celebration but also of aspirations, “Celebration because the active spirit of the Filipino youth and children is recognized in their role in nation-building, their ability to improve the future of Philippine society, and aspiration (because) the time has come for us to set new goals, aspirations and targets to fortify our purpose for building a healthier community for the children.” Co explained, adding, “Today reinvigorates are commitment to ensure basic needs in order for children to develop into healthy and capable and active Filipinos free from the shackles of poverty, neglect, abuse and exploitation.”

Former chairperson of the Committee on the Welfare of Children Rep. Yedda Marie Romualdez shared how advocating child welfare policies remain incredibly meaningful for her, “I still vividly remember the many times we had the opportunity to meet different groups of young people to hear their perspectives, honesty, ideas and visions for a better future … Since then, I have never stopped seeking opportunities to amplify children’s voices because their participation is vital. They must be involved in all decisions affecting them.”

She cited that the House has passed critical laws that expanded healthcare access, strengthened child protection from abuse and exploitation, increased benefits for children with disabilities, improved the nation’s nutrition program, among others, “I am proud of what we have accomplished together to uphold children’s rights and dignity.”

Child Rights Network (CRN) Convenor and Executive Director (ED) Mr. Romeo Dongeto agreed, acknowledging that the Philippines has passed several laws which is a testament to the country’s continuing commitment to ensure that the rights of children are protected, upheld and respected.
