DOHINOB Marine Turtle Hatchery and Rescue Center of DENR-CENRO Manukan released eighty-two (82) Olive Ridley (๐˜“๐˜ช๐˜ฑ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฐ๐˜ค๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜บ๐˜ด ๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ท๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ฆ๐˜ข) hatchlings in commemoration of this year’s World Sea Turtle Day around 4:00 o’clock in the afternoon on June 16, 2023, at Barangay Dohinob, Manuel A. Roxas, Zamboanga del Norte.

The successful release was made possible after Hatchery Technician, Mr. Themistocles M. Yaco, translocated eighty-three (83) pawikan eggs at the identified nesting sites in this office’s Area of Responsibility on April 18, 2023. The translocation was conducted after it was observed that the nest was prone to inundation during high tide. The release was witnessed by the personnel of LGU Roxas Police Station, together with the students and faculty of Dohinob National High School.

Since October 2022 to date, a total of one thousand two hundred sixty-six (1,266) Olive Ridley hatchlings have been released from the fifteen (15) clutches of Pawikan eggs translocated at the hatchery.

According to DAO-2019-09, otherwise known as the Updated National List of Threatened Philippine Fauna and their categories, the Olive Ridley Turtle is classified as an “endangered” species, which refers to a species that is not critically endangered but whose survival in the wild is unlikely if the causal factors continue operating. Wildlife species are protected under Republic Act 9147, or the “Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act”, which prohibits anybody from collecting, hunting, injuring, killing, or destroying wildlife species, including handling or possessing wildlife without permits or licenses.
