THE National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) will pursue a probe against the hosts of online show “Machong Chismisan” following their now-deleted episode that mocked Josh Aquino, son of former President Benigno Aquino III and actress Kris Aquino, over his disability.
NBI Director Melvin Matibag confirmed the directive Thursday during an appearance on “Fast Talk with Boy Abunda,” sharing a message he sent to the broadcaster expressing deep sadness over the incident. Matibag said he was “deeply moved and saddened” by reports of the remarks and is taking immediate action.
Matibag has instructed the NBI Cybercrime Division and Special Action Unit to conduct the investigation and file appropriate charges against those responsible. “Today, I am directing our CCD and SAU to investigate and file appropriate charges against those who mocked him, in accordance with the law,” he stated. He emphasized that the action upholds justice not only for Josh Aquino and his family but for all persons with special needs who deserve respect, dignity, and compassion. “As head of a law enforcement bureau, I cannot turn a blind eye to such acts. It is my legal and moral duty,” Matibag added.
The controversy has drawn widespread condemnation from lawmakers, disability advocacy groups, and members of the public, who have called for accountability and reminded the public that freedom of speech does not extend to demeaning or exploiting vulnerable individuals. The episode in question has already been removed from the show’s platforms, but the NBI will examine available records and evidence to determine the full scope of liability.
