MAKATI Mayor Abby Binay said the Department of Education (DepEd) has granted her request to distribute school supplies to the students of public schools in the EMBO barangays.
Binay thanked Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte for her decision that would allow Makati to help 45,000 students.
Binay is set to begin the distribution today, Wednesday.
“Maraming salamat, VP Sara. Pwede ng ipamigay ang school supplies sa LAHAT (45,000) na estudyante sa 14 na eskwelahan sa embo,” she said on Facebook.
She said the students could be assured of quality supplies from Makati.
While the Supreme Court ruled that the barangays are under the jurisdiction of Taguig, Binay has maintained that the schools are located on properties that belong to the Makati City government as it had purchased these with its own funds.
Makati has also insisted that Taguig must secure a writ of execution before the Supreme Court ruling could be implemented.
Taguig has rejected this and said the ruling is self-executing.
The DepEd has taken over administration of the EMBO schools in the meantime.
Binay’s announcement about the DepEd decision came after Taguig said on Tuesday that it has begun its distribution of school kits to students in the city, including those in the EMBO barangays.
Taguig said the students in the schools would receive a school package consisting of a bag, daily and PE uniforms, socks, black shoes, rubber shoes, and a complete set of basic school supplies.
It also offered scholarship programs to all qualified residents of the city’s 10 new barangays, saying this is not limited to the upper 10 percent of the graduating class.
