FOLLOWING the magnitude 6.9 earthquake in Cebu, the Department of Education (DepEd) will implement modular learning and construct temporary classrooms in northern Cebu after over 7,500 classrooms were damaged, affecting over 19,000 students.
According to Education Secretary Sonny Angara, the priority is to resume classes as quickly as possible while repairs and reconstruction of schools are underway.
Based on DepEd data, 5,587 classrooms sustained minor damage, 803 sustained major damage, and 1,187 were completely destroyed.
Nearly 950 teachers and staff were also affected. DepEd will provide lesson packets and EduKahon kits, utilize the Dynamic Learning Program, and establish Temporary Learning Spaces to minimize lost school days.
Teachers in areas under a state of calamity can also avail themselves of Special Emergency Leave. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has assured continued government support and coordination with local officials for rehabilitation efforts.
