Sugar prices to go down in September — PCAFI

admin August 14, 2022

THE Philippine Chamber of Agriculture and Food Inc. (PCAFI) said they expect that sugar prices will go down in September as milling starts next week.

PCAFI President Danilo Fausto noted that about 50 percent of the produced sugar goes to industrial users, 30 percent to household consumers, and 20 percent to institutions, such as restaurants and hospitals.

Fausto also supported the decision of President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr. to block the 300,000 MT sugar importation.

“Tama si Presidente na ‘wag papasukin ‘yung 300,000 [MT] kasi mag-uumpisa na ‘yung milling at saka ‘yung harvest eh,” Fausto said.

He added that sugar importation should be halted during the milling and harvest season so that local industry producers and workers will not be put in a disadvantageous situation.
