August 8 is International Cat Day

admin August 3, 2022

Of all God’s creatures, there is only one that cannot be made slave of the leash. That one is the cat. If man could be crossed with the cat it would improve the man, but it would deteriorate the cat. — Writer and humorist Mark Twain

I HEARD a funny story and it narrates how a lovable cat charmed Pia Wurtzbach while the 2015 Miss Universe was on her way home from her regular running routine!

In her Instagram account, posted with other stories, Pia shared a video where the adorable cat was doing circles around Pia’s feet and not leaving her side.

“So this sweet cat found me while I was walking back home from my run and [s/he] just started doing this,” the beauty queen wrote.

“Cutie! I wanted to rub her belly but that’s what you do to dogs so I wasn’t sure if it’s the same for cats,” she added. In a separate IG story, the cat slept with her belly and legs up. Pia found the pose adorable, which led her to caption, “CUTIE,” “Uwi na kita,” followed by “Baby I want a cat,” which she tagged to her fiancé Jeremy Jauncey.

Actually, I can relate to Pia’s experience and feeling for the cat. Since I was little I had numerous pet cats because I simply felt happy with all of them around me. For me, my feline pets are cuddly, loving and amusing.

My first cat I named Beauty because she had three colors in her coat. I remember I cried so hard when I thought she was being bullied by a neighbor’s cat; but my mom explained that it was normal for cats to fight whenever they were courting.

And years later, I was already a teener when I adopted a tiny stray cat, who grew to be a big male with rich yellow-orange fur. I called him Pugot because he had a stump for a tail and I trained him to lick the tip of my nose and roll over while twisting and turning whenever I told him so.

I loved that cat and so did my grandma and, amazingly, on the exact day that my Lola Epang died, Pugot likewise bade me adieu.

That was decades ago and more recently, my daughter Karin gave me a Siamese with a thick grayish coat. I got him hitched with a native cat and they had a litter of five kitties.

Three of them I gave away for adoption and the remaining two remained with me.

Eventually however, I had to give them up and including their father, Potchie. But right now, I have two cats in our house in Caloocan, Siomai and her son Putol, who is very much an adorable cat as compared to his mom.

Both are so very afraid of my wife, Heidi, and they are trained to follow her every instruction as if they could understood human language.

Perhaps what I gave shared today would give you an insight of how and why I love cats.

They really are adorable creatures and I often sing tribute to them than mention ‘pussy willow and cattails’ during the times I frequented the videoke bars and karaoke lounges in Malate.

By the way, let me remind cat lovers that it’s International Cat Day on August 8.
