DISKARTE (Diskarte para sa Pamilya at Bayan) has called on the government to implement comprehensive economic reforms to cushion Filipino families and small businesses from the effects of the Philippine peso’s depreciation against the US dollar.
In a press statement, DISKARTE warned that a weaker peso could drive up the cost of imported goods, fuel, raw materials, and other essential commodities, further burdening households already struggling with the high cost of living.
The group also expressed concern over the impact of rising import costs on micro and small enterprises, which face higher operating expenses that could threaten their viability and the jobs they provide. DISKARTE urged the government to strengthen price safeguards, accelerate national industrialization, improve domestic agricultural and manufacturing production, and provide greater assistance to small entrepreneurs.
It also called for measures to protect workers, freelancers, solo parents, and senior citizens from the adverse effects of rising prices.
The group emphasized the need to reduce the country’s excessive dependence on imported goods, strengthen domestic energy security, expand exports, and encourage productive investments to build a more resilient economy.
While acknowledging that exchange rates are influenced by various domestic and international factors, DISKARTE stressed that the government must pursue policies that strengthen the country’s economic foundations.
“The answer to a weakening peso is not merely to defend the currency in financial markets, but to build an economy capable of producing more, creating decent jobs, and meeting the needs of its people,” the statement said.
DISKARTE maintained that a stronger Philippine economy must be built on competitive local industries, productive workers, thriving small businesses, and equitable economic opportunities for Filipino families and communities.
