THE Philippine Embassy in Madrid confirmed Wednesday that a Filipino national is among those hurt in a deadly collision between two high-speed trains in Spain that has left at least 68 people dead and more than 100 others injured.
The embassy stated the Filipino sustained only minor injuries and was taken to a hospital for medical care, though the individual’s identity and full condition have not been disclosed. The incident took place near Urda in the province of Toledo, south of Madrid, when a Renfe service struck the rear of a stationary train operated by private carrier Iryo.
Authorities are still working to account for all those involved, and the embassy said it is coordinating closely with Spanish officials and railway operators to determine whether other Filipinos may have been affected.
The Department of Foreign Affairs in Manila has been contacted for further details on the victim’s status and any additional Filipino casualties, but has not yet issued an update. The embassy has urged families and friends in the Philippines who are unable to reach loved ones traveling on the Madrid–Andalusia line to contact Renfe’s dedicated helpline at +34 900 10 10 20 or its 24‑hour hotline at +34 616 491 861 for assistance.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has declared three days of national mourning starting Thursday as the country grieves one of its worst rail disasters in recent memory. Investigations are underway to establish the cause of the collision, which has raised questions about signalling and safety protocols on the high‑speed network.
The Philippine Embassy assured the public that it will release further announcements as soon as additional information is verified, and remains committed to providing consular assistance to any Filipino affected by the tragedy.
