SENATOR Alan Peter Cayetano on Sunday explained that his recent trip to Singapore with family was simply for rest and relaxation, dismissing public questions over their travels abroad.
In a Facebook Live broadcast early Sunday, Cayetano emphasized that the journey was entirely private and that there was no legal or ethical reason preventing them from traveling. “It was private and we just wanted to rest,” he stated, adding that relevant authorities including the Bureau of Immigration and the Office of the Ombudsman had confirmed there were no restrictions barring their departure.
Cayetano expressed surprise that what he described as a “routine, quiet and short” trip had become a matter of public discussion. He attributed the unwarranted attention to what he called the country’s increasingly “toxic” political environment, where routine actions are quickly twisted into controversy. The clarification came after photos of Senators Alan Peter and Pia Cayetano arriving at Changi Airport circulated online, sparking speculation about the purpose and timing of their travel.
The scrutiny coincides with lingering controversies linked to the Cayetanos, including questions over the construction of the SEA Games cauldron in 2019 and recently submitted documents by Senator Panfilo Lacson alleging “systemic anomalies” in flood control projects in Taguig City — their political bailiwick. Cayetano characterized these developments as part of a pattern of “persecution” directed at him, his family, and Taguig. He remarked that threatened cases, investigations, and shifting accusations were simply “the cost of fighting for the country,” adding: “I leave it all to the Lord.”
