A POWERFUL magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck off Sarangani, Davao Occidental, on Wednesday afternoon, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) confirmed.
The tectonic quake occurred at 12:13 p.m. with a very shallow depth of focus of just 10 kilometers, making its shaking felt strongly across the nearby island and surrounding communities. Instrumental Intensity V was recorded in Sarangani, indicating moderate to strong shaking capable of causing items to fall and causing noticeable movement in buildings.
Despite the strength of the tremor, Phivolcs stated there is no threat of a tsunami and no immediate reports of serious damage. The agency also noted that significant aftershocks are not expected from this seismic event, providing reassurance to residents who may have been alarmed by the powerful shaking.
Authorities nevertheless advised the public to remain vigilant and report any observed damage to local officials. Structures near coastal and mountainous areas are reminded to check for cracks or signs of weakening, even if no immediate damage is visible, given the quake’s shallow depth. Phivolcs continues to monitor the area and will release further updates should new information become available.
