NATIONAL Bureau of Investigation Director Melvin Matibag confirmed on Monday that the same group of individuals allegedly behind death threats against Senator Risa Hontiveros also issued threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
Matibag disclosed that the bureau has received numerous threats targeting the President as part of the same pattern of intimidation. “Actually, we’ve already penetrated it. Though I cannot give too many details because we are still investigating,” he told reporters in a media interview.
The investigation was launched after Hontiveros received a wave of online death threats following the killing of vlogger Alicia “Mima Alicia” Lipata in Caloocan City on July 17.
Authorities have since identified persons of interest linked to the threats and are currently building up cases for potential filing before the Department of Justice. Matibag confirmed that the NBI is systematically documenting the threatening messages and tracing their sources to establish accountability.
Matibag declined to share further specifics, citing the sensitivity of the ongoing probe. He assured the public that the bureau will continue gathering evidence and will formally file complaints once sufficient proof has been obtained. The NBI remains committed to identifying and prosecuting those responsible for intimidating public officials and spreading threats online, regardless of who the targets may be.
