A STRONG earthquake shook the waters near Governor Generoso, Davao Oriental on Monday afternoon, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
Initially reported as magnitude 6.6, the tremor was later revised to magnitude 6.2, with its epicenter traced to 164 kilometers south‑southeast of the municipality. It struck at 5:18 p.m., originating from a tectonic movement at a depth of 94 kilometers—updated from the earlier estimate of 86 kilometers.
Authorities clarified that due to the quake’s depth and distance from land, no significant damage or destructive tsunami is anticipated. However, Phivolcs advised residents in Davao Oriental and surrounding provinces to stay vigilant and expect possible aftershocks in the coming hours and days. Local disaster response teams remain on standby to monitor developments and assist communities, reminding the public to follow safety protocols and be prepared for any ground movements.
