A LARGE-SCALE fire broke out at the Commonwealth Market situated along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City, destroying sections of the busy commercial establishment in the early hours of Saturday.
The incident occurred before daybreak, catching vendors and nearby residents by surprise as flames quickly spread across the area, prompting an immediate response from local fire authorities and emergency teams.
According to reports from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), the blaze was first recorded at 2:35 a.m. and grew in intensity rapidly, prompting fire officials to raise the alarm status to the fifth level by 4:58 a.m.
The escalation indicated that the fire had become difficult to contain and required additional fire trucks and personnel from nearby stations to help bring the situation under control. Firefighters worked continuously for nearly four hours, battling strong winds and tight spaces within the market premises that made access and extinguishment operations challenging.
After coordinated efforts from responding units, authorities finally declared the fire under control at 6:16 a.m., and it was officially declared completely extinguished at 6:36 a.m.
No casualties have been reported so far, though significant damage is expected to properties, goods, and stalls within the market compound. Investigators are currently conducting an assessment to determine the exact cause of the fire and estimate the total amount of damage incurred as a result of the incident.
