La Castellana, Negros Occidental – A radio announcer who also served as a job order worker for the local government in Himamaylan City was killed on Friday afternoon in what appeared to be a targeted shooting.
The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. in Sitio Lapak Kawayanan, Barangay Robles, La Castellana.
The victim has been identified as Julito “Jaz” Diamante Calo, 49, a well-known figure who hosted the program “Waswasanay sa Quinto Distrito” on 88.3 DNN News FM, based in Himamaylan City. According to Marny John Yude, the station manager, Calo was shot in the head.
Initial police investigations reveal that Calo was standing in front of his house by the roadside when a white SUV, traveling from La Carlota City, stopped near him. A person from the vehicle then emerged and shot Calo, resulting in his immediate death. The assailant subsequently fled the scene towards the town proper of La Castellana.
Authorities have since established checkpoints and initiated a pursuit operation to apprehend the suspect.
Reports suggest that a town councilor allegedly punched Calo prior to the fatal shooting. The motive behind the killing is currently under investigation, with police exploring all possible leads.
