Motorist stops on expressway to retrieve dead dog, LTO reacts

admin March 5, 2026

A MOTORIST caused a traffic hazard on the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) after stopping in the middle of the highway to retrieve a dead dog and slowly crossing to the side to set the animal aside.

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) criticized the act, emphasizing the danger it posed to both the driver and other motorists.

According to the LTO, such actions are highly unsafe. They stressed that there are proper authorities responsible for removing dead animals from the road, especially on busy highways like the NLEX. Instead of stopping, motorists are advised to report obstructions or dead animals through the NLEX hotline at 1-35000 or send a message via their social media account, NLEX Expressways.

In response to the incident, the LTO (Land Transportation Office) has issued a show cause order against the driver involved. Under this order, the driver’s license has been suspended for 90 days while the case is being reviewed. Additionally, the vehicle used by the driver has been placed on alarm status as part of the due process.

The LTO clarified that the show cause order is not a penalty but a procedural step to ensure proper investigation. They reiterated that safety on the roads is a shared responsibility and urged drivers to avoid stopping in the middle of the highway and to report any road obstructions immediately.
