A CIVIL society group, “Wag Kang KuCorrupt,” filed an ethics complaint against Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa on Wednesday, citing his repeated absences from Senate sessions and committee hearings.
The complaint, submitted to the Senate committee on ethics and privileges, accuses Dela Rosa of dereliction of duty and abuse of the privilege entrusted to him by the Filipino people.
The group argues that Dela Rosa’s continued failure to attend to his senatorial duties undermines the legislative process and disregards his constitutional and moral obligations. “As an elected public official receiving compensation from public funds, a senator carries the constitutional and moral obligation to attend sessions, participate in legislative deliberations, and fulfill oversight responsibilities,” the complaint stated.
“Wag Kang KuCorrupt” also emphasized the consequential delays caused by Dela Rosa’s absence, particularly in his capacity as Chair of Senate committees. These delays, they argue, affect scheduled hearings, pending legislative measures, oversight functions, and the timely consideration of critical issues.
The civil society group is urging the Senate committee to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter, assess potential violations of Senate rules and ethical standards, and, if necessary, impose sanctions.
“Wag Kang KuCorrupt” includes prominent figures such as former Office of the Vice President spokesman Atty. Barry Gutierrez and former Finance undersecretary Cielo Magno, lending credibility to the complaint.
The filing of this ethics complaint raises questions about accountability and representation in the Senate, potentially impacting public trust in the legislative body.
