THE Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) announced on Wednesday that it will begin public consultations next week to address petitions for fare increases from various transport groups.
The move comes as these groups cite the continuous rise in oil prices and the increasing costs of vehicle maintenance as key factors impacting their operations.
Atty. Vigor Mendoza III, chairperson of the LTFRB, stated that the agency will hold two initial hearings next week, with weekly discussions to follow. “We understand the difficulties faced by our public transport operators due to the ongoing fuel price hikes,” Mendoza said in a statement. “These consultations will allow us to thoroughly examine the issues and find a balanced solution that considers both the needs of the transport sector and the riding public.”
Transport groups are seeking a P2.00 increase in the minimum fare, which would raise the minimum fare for traditional jeepneys from P13.00 to P15.00, and for modern jeepneys from P15.00 to P17.00. Additionally, the groups are requesting that the P1.00 provisional increase granted in 2023 be made permanent. The petitions also include a request for additional charges for each kilometer traveled beyond the initial four kilometers covered by the minimum fare.
The potential fare hike has raised concerns among commuters, many of whom are already struggling with the increasing cost of living. Consumer groups have urged the LTFRB to carefully consider the impact of any fare adjustments on the general public. “While we recognize the challenges faced by transport operators, it’s crucial to ensure that any fare increase is reasonable and does not place an undue burden on ordinary Filipinos,” said a spokesperson for a local commuter rights organization.
The LTFRB has assured the public that all sides will be taken into consideration during the consultations. The agency encourages commuters, transport operators, and other stakeholders to participate in the discussions to help reach a fair and equitable resolution.
