AT least eight people have reportedly died due to the effects of Tropical Cyclone Basyang (Penha), according to the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) this Saturday.
OCD Deputy Spokesperson Diego Agustin Mariano reported that four people died, including two children (12 years old and 11 months old), in a landslide in Cagayan de Oro; three died in Iligan City due to flooding; and one drowned in Agusan del Norte.
In Cagayan de Oro, the landslide occurred in Zone-1 Sambulawan, Gabule Compound, Barangay Agusan, caused by weak posts of a new construction and continuous heavy rains.
In Iligan City, which is under a state of calamity, a steel bridge collapsed in Barangay Puga-an, and strong floodwaters hit vehicles in Barangay Mahayahay. Approximately 3,800 families were affected in the city. In Cagayan de Oro, more than 2,000 individuals were evacuated.
Basyang, which was then a tropical storm, made landfall in Bayabas, Surigao del Sur on Friday morning and brought heavy rain to Agusan del Norte, Bohol Sea, and Bohol. On Friday night, it was located in Negros Oriental and was continuously dissipating.
