A SOMBER note marked Christmas Day in Manila as a stray bullet claimed the life of an individual in Barangay Laurel, Tondo. The Philippine National Police (PNP) reported the incident, which occurred around 12:50 a.m. during what was described as a drinking spree.
According to PNP data, the victim was struck by a stray bullet. A 9 mm caliber pistol was recovered from the scene, but the suspect remains at large as the investigation continues.
In related news, the PNP has apprehended seven individuals across the country for indiscriminate firing between December 16 and December 26. These arrests took place in Metro Manila, Ilocos Region, Central Luzon, Western Visayas, Caraga, Cordillera Administrative Region, and Negros Island Region.
The PNP had previously issued a stern warning to police personnel and gun owners, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy for indiscriminate firing during the holiday season.
“Ang baril ay hindi laruan at lalong hindi simbolo ng kawalan ng disiplina… Sa panahon ng selebrasyon, mas mahalaga ang kaligtasan ng bawat isa. I-celebrate natin ang Pasko at Bagong Taon nang ligtas, tahimik, at walang napapahamak,” stated PNP acting chief Police Lieutenant General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr.
(A firearm is not a toy and certainly not a symbol of lack of discipline… During celebrations, everyone’s safety is more important. Let us celebrate Christmas and New Year safely, peacefully, and without anyone getting hurt.)
The PNP continues to urge the public to celebrate responsibly and safely during the holiday season, prioritizing the well-being of all citizens.
