A SHOCKING and rare act of violence unfolded in central Taipei on Friday (December 19), leaving three people dead and five injured after a knife-wielding attacker went on a rampage.
The incident, which began with smoke bombs at Taipei’s main train station, culminated in the attacker’s death during a police chase after falling from a building, according to Premier Cho Jung-tai. The Premier assured the public that authorities are thoroughly investigating the incident, emphasizing the unusual nature of such violent crime in Taiwan.
The attacker, who had a prior criminal record and outstanding warrants, initiated the chaos by setting off smoke bombs at Taipei’s main train station.
He then fled to a nearby subway station in a bustling shopping district, attacking people along the way. Video footage from a local news outlet captured the man throwing gas canisters on a busy street before proceeding towards a shopping mall with a large knife. Amidst the unfolding horror, voices could be heard urging pedestrians to contact the police as the man began his assault.
Premier Cho Jung-tai confirmed that the deceased suspect’s residence has been searched as part of the ongoing investigation. Preliminary findings suggest that, in addition to smoke grenades, the attacker likely possessed items such as petrol bombs, which appeared to have been ignited at the scene.
Furthermore, the attacker was reportedly wearing what appeared to be body armor and a mask, indicating a degree of premeditation.
The Premier reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of its citizens, vowing to thoroughly investigate the motives behind this unprecedented act of violence and take necessary measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
