AN election watchdog group, Kontra Daya, has formally requested the Senate ethics committee to investigate Senator Rodante Marcoleta for allegedly making “willful and deliberate falsehood” in his Statement of Contributions and Expenditures (SOCE) for the upcoming May 2025 elections.
Kontra Daya, in collaboration with the Advocates of Public Interest Law (APIL), submitted a letter to the Senate committee on ethics and privileges on Tuesday, urging a thorough probe into Marcoleta’s SOCE. The request stems from a television interview where Marcoleta allegedly admitted to not fully disclosing his campaign donors for the May midterm elections.
“In view of these circumstances, we respectfully request that the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges initiate an inquiry into Senator Marcoleta’s actions and determine the appropriate response under the Senate’s rules and disciplinary authority,” the letter stated.
The groups argue that Marcoleta’s alleged actions “raise serious questions about compliance with election law and the standards of conduct expected of a Member of the Senate of the Philippines.” They emphasize that transparency and honesty in campaign finance reporting are crucial for maintaining public trust in the electoral process.
“We believe that conduct of this nature is inconsistent with the standards expected of members of the Senate,” the letter added, highlighting the gravity of the allegations against Senator Marcoleta.
The Senate ethics committee has yet to comment on the request. If the committee decides to proceed with an investigation, Senator Marcoleta could face potential sanctions depending on the findings. The controversy underscores the importance of adhering to campaign finance regulations and the accountability of elected officials.
