PASIG City Mayor Vico Sotto took to his Facebook page to announce the city’s latest effort to combat gambling: Ordinance No. 26 s-2025, which prohibits the promotion and advertising of gambling within Pasig City.
In his post, Mayor Sotto also recalled the challenges and even alleged bribery attempts faced by the city council when they banned Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) and computer gambling shops (“e-games”) in 2022.
Mayor Sotto stated, “In 2022, we became the first LGU to BAN both POGO and computer gambling shops (“e-games”) within our jurisdiction. While we were passing the Ordinance (no. 55 s-2022), we received a countless numbers of messages asking us to reconsider; at least 2 councilors told me they were offered money. But we stood firm.” He expressed his satisfaction that POGOs have now been banned throughout the Philippines and that convictions have been made in connection with related crimes.
The new ordinance, authored by Councilor Paul Senogat, prohibits gambling companies from using billboards, signages, sponsorships, and other forms of advertising within Pasig City. Mayor Sotto acknowledged the limitations of the LGU’s power when it comes to national or online gambling but emphasized that prohibiting local advertising is a significant step.
Mayor Sotto explained the rationale behind the ordinance, citing the numerous cases he has witnessed of lives being ruined by active-play gambling games.
While respecting an individual’s right to choose to gamble, he expressed concern about the constant reminders and encouragement to return to gambling. He concluded his post by thanking Councilor Paul Senogat for authoring the ordinance.
