PH to ban pork products from Spain over African swine fever concerns

admin December 3, 2025

THE Philippines is implementing a ban on pork products originating from Spain due to confirmed cases of African swine fever (ASF) in the European nation, according to Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr.

The ban aims to protect the local hog industry from the highly contagious and deadly animal disease.

Secretary Tiu Laurel Jr. announced that the official ban order will be released on Wednesday and will cover pork products produced after November 11, 2025.

This measure ensures that products potentially exposed to the virus are prevented from entering the Philippine market. “For ASF, in Spain, the order to ban will be released today. We identified that this will cover anything produced after November 11, which will not be allowed until they are cleared of ASF,” he stated.

The decision to impose the ban underscores the Philippine government’s commitment to safeguarding its agricultural sector from the devastating effects of ASF.

The disease poses a significant threat to the country’s pork supply and the livelihoods of local hog farmers. The ban will remain in effect until Spain is officially declared free from ASF, as determined by international animal health standards.
