A 39-year-old kindergarten teacher was fatally shot by her 49-year-old husband inside Agbanga Elementary School in Matalom, Leyte, on Wednesday morning.
The suspect gained entry to the school, which lacks a security guard, by posing as a delivery rider.
Fellow teachers reported that the couple was engaged in an argument before the victim fled towards a classroom seeking assistance. The suspect pursued her, shooting her twice in the neck before fleeing the scene. No other individuals were injured during the incident, according to police reports.
Investigations revealed that the victim had previously filed a complaint against the suspect. “Ang nakikita po naming motibo is itong family problem. Kasi months ago, ito pong babae nag-file ng case, particularly VAWC or RA 9262,” stated Matalom Municipal Police Station officer-in-charge Police Lieutenant Ronnel Cawili, indicating that the motive appears to be related to a family dispute and a previous case of Violence Against Women and Children (VAWC) filed by the victim.
Following the shooting, the suspect was found dead inside a bathroom at their residence in Matalom Proper, with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Teachers and students at Agbanga Elementary School are currently receiving psychological intervention. The Schools Division of Leyte has announced that enhanced security measures will be implemented at the school in response to the tragic event.
