Dismissal order against Villanueva sought; senator claims harassment

admin October 23, 2025

OMBUDSMAN Jesus Crispin Remulla announced his intention to request the Senate President to enforce a 2016 dismissal order against Senator Joel Villanueva, reigniting a long-standing legal battle.

The Ombudsman’s move raises questions about the timing and motivation behind the renewed effort to enforce the dismissal order, which stems from a case filed several years ago. The situation has sparked a debate about the separation of powers and the potential for political maneuvering within the government.

In response to Remulla’s announcement, Senator Villanueva asserted that he had anticipated potential harassment and the spread of false information. He presented documentation demonstrating that the dismissal case against him was dismissed in 2019, effectively clearing him of the charges. Villanueva’s swift response and presentation of evidence suggest a proactive approach to defending his reputation and position.

Senator Villanueva further bolstered his defense by presenting a 2025 clearance from the Office of the Ombudsman, confirming that he has no pending criminal or administrative cases.

This clearance directly contradicts the Ombudsman’s claim of an outstanding dismissal order, adding another layer of complexity to the situation. The conflicting statements and evidence presented by both parties set the stage for a potentially contentious legal and political battle. The public awaits further clarification and resolution of the matter.
