THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) announced on Monday that at least four senatorial candidates during the 2025 May midterm elections are under investigation for allegedly receiving campaign donations from contractors, a potential violation of election laws.
Comelec chairperson George Erwin Garcia stated that the poll body has identified 21 contractors who donated to the campaigns of at least seven candidates, including four senatorial bets and two party-list organizations. Garcia emphasized that contractors involved in government projects are prohibited from contributing funds to candidates under the Omnibus Election Code.
The Comelec is currently awaiting certification from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to determine if 55 contractors who allegedly donated to candidates during the 2022 elections were indeed government contractors. The Comelec is aiming to complete the investigation into the 2025 SOCEs before Friday.
