LAS Piñas Rep. Mark Anthony Santos praised President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s decision to realign around PHP36 billion originally allocated for the Department of Public Works and Highways’ (DPWH) flood control projects toward various programs of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).
“This is a humane decision that will surely benefit our countrymen most affected by calamities and poverty,” Santos said. “Instead of idle projects, these funds will directly go to social services that are immediately felt by the people.”
In his speech at the “Kumustahan Kasama ang Huwarang Pantawid Pamilya” in Malacañang, President Marcos said the realigned funds would strengthen the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations (AICS), and the Sustainable Livelihood Program, among other initiatives.
The President added that the government is also reviewing possible amendments to the 4Ps Act to ensure that beneficiaries are better prepared for long-term self-sufficiency.
Under the AICS, the government provides medical, burial, transportation, educational, food, or other financial assistance to individuals or families experiencing crisis.
According to Santos, the administration’s focus on programs that directly help the poor is a major step toward genuine inclusive development.
“When the 4Ps, AICS, and livelihood programs are strengthened, more Filipinos are given the opportunity to rise above poverty and become productive members of society,” the lawmaker explained.
Santos also stressed that once corruption and anomalies in government—whether in agencies or among elected officials—are eliminated, more funds will be available for meaningful projects and aid that directly benefit the people.
He also emphasized that Las Piñas residents would be pleased with the President’s move: “This is a great relief for the people of Las Piñas and the entire nation. This kind of governance provides hope and confidence that the government is truly working for the welfare of the people.”
