DEPUTY Minority Leader Akbayan Rep. Perci Cendaña today filed the Autism Care Act or HB 3198, a landmark bill that seeks to establish comprehensive social and institutional support systems for Filipinos with autism.
“We want to include persons with autism: in our schools, the workplace, especially in our healthcare system. They deserve care, compassion, and support that always meets them where they are,” Rep. Cendaña said.
“The Autism Care Act allows them to be independent, to self-actualize, and to realize their full potential,” he added.
Currently, the available Philhealth packages for persons with autism are specific for children. Rep. Cendaña thus called for a more expanded Philhealth coverage to include essential interventions for adults with autism.
“Nananawagan tayo sa Philhealth na hindi matapos ang suporta nila sa mga children with autism. Kailangang tumawid din ito hanggang pagtanda nila. To offer them lifelong care is to offer them lifelong dignity — one that is available, dependable, and accessible to them every step of their way,” he concluded.
Upon the enactment of the bill, the National Autism Care Plan will be implemented through comprehensive information campaigns for persons with autism, along with specialized training for teachers, parents, and public service providers to equip them with the sensitivity to support individuals on the spectrum.
