DepEd to hold make-up classes after typhoon disruptions

THE Department of Education (DepEd) will implement make-up classes to compensate for the week-long suspension of in-person classes caused by recent typhoons,

Education Secretary Sonny Angara announced on Tuesday. Angara emphasized the necessity of these make-up sessions, stating that failure to do so would result in significant learning loss for students.

Multiple tropical storms in July led to widespread school closures across several regions due to heavy rains and flooding. The disruption to the academic calendar necessitates a flexible approach to ensure students can catch up on missed material without placing undue burden on students or teachers.

The specific scheduling of make-up classes will be determined at the school level, with options including extending weekday class hours or holding classes on Saturdays.

Secretary Angara stressed the importance of considering teachers’ schedules and ensuring they have adequate rest. DepEd will release detailed guidelines in collaboration with regional and school officials, enabling them to tailor schedule adjustments to their unique circumstances.

This initiative reflects DepEd’s commitment to mitigating learning loss resulting from increasingly frequent and severe climate-related disruptions, highlighting the need for more adaptable and resilient academic calendars in the face of climate change.
