MEMBERS of Akbayan Partylist together with civil society alliance Tindig Pilipinas conducted an indignation rally condemning the Supreme Court’s recent decision declaring as unconstitutional the impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte. Joining the action was Akbayan Rep. Perci Cendaña who called on both houses of Congress to assert their independence against the Court’s decision by exhausting all legal means to continue the impeachment trial.
“This lamentable mistake by our High Court must be challenged through all legal means available. Kailangan igiit ng Senado at Kamara ang kanilang mandato sa proseso ng impeachment–ituloy ang paglilitis,” according to Rep. Cendaña.
“The Court’s decision effectively creates new impeachment rules na wala sa Saligang Batas o sa mga nakaraang desisyon ng Korte. Their decision tilted the scales of justice in favor of VP Sara Duterte,” Rep. Cendaña emphasized.

“Our justices chose to serve the interests of the Dutertes and shield the VP from accountability. Filipinos deserve an Independent Supreme Court and should hold the court accountable if it falls short of that. May kalalagyan ang pagtataksil sa taumbayan–kasali na riyan ang posibleng impeachment,” according to Rep. Cendaña.
Rep. Cendaña also reiterated the need to rejoin the International Criminal Court as further protection of the constitution.
According to Rep. Cendaña, “Kung pati sa pinakamataas na hukuman may mga galamay ang mga Duterte saan tatakbo ang mga mamamayan? The Court of last resort has become the last refuge for the most poweful of plunderers and outlaws. Mas lalong binigyan diin sa ipinakita ng SC na dapat bumalik ang bansa sa ICC.”
